408 & 414 N Liberty St.
Historic Information
The F.W. Woolworth Company building at 408 North Liberty Street and 414 North Liberty Street are contributing buildings to the Downtown Winston-Salem Historic District. On February 23, 1960, a group of Wake Forest students walked into the Woolworth’s in downtown Winston-Salem and joined students from Winston-Salem State Teachers College to protest segregated lunch counters. Twenty-one students were arrested that day – ten white students from Wake Forest and 11 black students from Winston-Salem State. They were charged with trespassing and found guilty a week later. However, the students’ non-violent protest, along with other protesters in Winston-Salem, led to the desegregation of the city’s restaurants and lunch counters on May 23rd of that year.
