Historic Information
The Edwin Hotel served as a hotel and short-term housing from the time it was built until 1944. Through 1911 the building was known as the Tremaine Apartments. By 1912 it was known as The Coach. From 1929 to 1941 it was called the Edwin Hotel. The main portion of the building began as a three-story building constructed 1894-95 for “Schatzinger,” a prominent Cleveland Real Estate Developer. A fourth story was added in 1895 for “Schatzinger & Tremaine.” The building was altered in 1910 for the new owner, “T. Koblitz,” at which time the rear two-story portion of the building was constructed. By 1947, the building has been converted entirely to commercial use and renamed the Bryer Building, after the main tenant, the Bryer Photo Supply Company. The architect Robert A. Little had offices there in the 1940s and 1950s. Little’s work included Halle’s Shaker Square store (1946) and the Musicarnival (1954).
